A short ................

I have been asked to make a short documentary. I have chosen to focus on community.
So far I have the following images:

Documentary One

Project
To photograph a group of young people living on a local housing estate.
Idea for documentary one.
Over the last 10 years there has been a rapid change in communities throughout the UK. In Sussex there has been little change in terms of diversity and multi ethnicity however, changes are evident in terms of: Community safety initiatives and employment and awareness of class, mobility and identity and Decline of traditional public spaces and places.
The majority of people living in my chosen area are white. Many of the people I have chosen to include in this documentary are from stable backgrounds, they work, are in education and intelligent and interesting. There is a perception that people from local areas (such as ****) are of an underclass, incapable of change.
I have worked, made friends, and have extended family members living in this area (I must try to find a suitable name for it). Over the last few years I have seen a rise in acceptance of political ideas that are based on far right principles. One family member is now a member of the BNP. These new beliefs being adopted are not influenced by mass invasion of ethnic minority groups who get the best treatment but, from a sense that, White people from traditional working class backgrounds are undervalued, add of little economic value to the changing world around them and that they choose to be excluded
The purpose of my documentary is not to prove any arguments. I want have images and comments that show people from (***) at work, study, at home, volunteering, and contributing to society and their families.
I have already contacted people for this documentary.
Most of the people taking part will be aged between 19 and 27 years of age.
Locations For shots
• Brighton marina.
• Churchill square middle street school football team
• The local youth club
• Inside houses
• The Football club
I have already taken shots at a local football match; I have also recorded the noise of the match.
I have included the following links as a guide to the arguments and research that is at the root of my documentary.

Supporting information
In 1999 I met a Tom Wichelow at City College (then Brighton College). At the time he was creating a series of photos on CCTV. His work can be seen on this link his work has influenced debates on the use of CCTV, the value of organic community and the value of social capital:

For my documentary I have been looking at the following information as evidence.
I have attached a link to a document called: who care’s about the White Working Class?
I also have the following photographs as a start to the documentary:
Photograph one is of a local football match, I also have photos of supporters.

Photograph two is a landscape that evidences the geographical detachment that communities like this one experiences.

For this documentary I am looking to tell the story in a way that surprises the reader. I want to challenge their assumptions and prejudices. I have been playing with different HTML and flash galleries to se what effect I can get. I will also rely heavily on my tutor for support.

I have just made a prototype website in my lessons at CCB.

Using notes from each lesson as follows:

• I have created a folder for my site images.
• In DW I have created my page
• I create my template in Photoshop
• I make slices.
• I export the slices
• Phil has given me a hand with making a LOGO.
• I shape and edit my main images
• I export as PNG making sure that the size of images are sufficiently reduced.
• I then import to light room

The website now site in the profile area of my blog.

Blog 1: initial thoughts

I have set up this blog with the intention of recording my progress in year two of my studies.
There is quite a lot to achieve in the next three months and at the moment this blog seems like a good idea in terms of clarifying and evaluating my goals and efforts. Over the next three months I will be developing a portfolio, website, and contacts from local businesses as well as attending classes and fulfilling assignments.

There are two assignments to complete;

a professional website

a documentary

I have no idea what the final result will be.
